Making Youth Sport Fun

I have (2) children under 5. Both of them are beginning to play in organized youth sport leagues. As someone that has spent most of their career managing recreational sport, I have seen many of examples of what works and what doesn’t. I do know that when a coach / instructor takes an approach to the sport or activity that creates the right balance of play, challenge, and teamwork, that is when the magic happens…children become engaged in the activity and have fun! It is commonplace for us as coaches and instructors to try and put lots of structure and rules on the sports that we are trying to teach our kids. We need to remember that children learn and develop through interactive play. While structure and rules play an important role in ensuring activity guidance and safety, it is okay for our kids to play tag during a portion of practice, play organized soccer with more then one ball at a time, and take a sticker breaks from practice because they are 5 years old.

The Livwell Community Center will be at Al Lorenz Park Family Fest on Saturday, May 20th promoting our Fall 2023 youth flag football league and having FUN playing games like Tic Tac Throw and an NFL Skills Passing Challenge. We look forward to seeing you and your family at the park on the 20th!
